Project Details

This was an award-winning repair, renovation and conservation of a Grade II* dwelling. The site was originally part of the neighbouring abbey, and the current building incorporates elements from the 13th century. It was later an episcopal manor house – a residence for the Bishop of Wells – and forms part of a scheduled ancient monument. Parts of the Great Hall remain, as does a possible vaulted undercroft. The work was carried out using traditional methods and materials, and
with consideration to the sensitivity of the site and the archaeology. Unsuitable materials and interventions were removed. Original but friable materials were conserved. The work included installation of kitchens, bathrooms, utility room, electrical services, heating systems, roofing, window repairs, re-rendering, chimney repairs, stone conservation, floors, and reinstatement of stone arch doorway.
